Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill glass

Place an old-fashioned glass (or rocks glass) in the freezer for 5–10 minutes, or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to lightly chill the glass.

  2. 2

    Mix ingredients

Add the Amaro Nonino, Montenegro Amaro, rye whiskey, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters into a mixing glass.

  3. 3

    Add ice and stir

Fill the mixing glass with large cubes of ice. Stir gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds (about 20–25 full strokes) until the mixture is well chilled, slightly diluted, and properly integrated.

  4. 4

    Prepare glass

Discard ice water from the chilled old-fashioned glass if used. Add one large clear ice cube to the chilled glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Double-strain the stirred cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube using a hawthorne strainer (or julep strainer) and a fine-mesh strainer if desired.

  6. 6

    Express and garnish

Take the orange peel and, skin side down, hold it 2–3 inches above the drink and give it a firm twist to express the oils over the cocktail. Rub the peel's rim on the glass, then drop the peel into the drink as garnish.

  7. 7

Serve immediately and enjoy. The Amaro Nonino-forward profile is balanced by Montenegro's sweeter herbal notes and the backbone of rye; adjust simple syrup by ±0.25 oz to taste.
