Method

Prepare Glass and Coffee

1

Warm glass

Preheat a heatproof 8–10 oz Irish coffee glass by filling it with hot tap water for 30–60 seconds. Dump the water and invert briefly to remove excess.

2

Brew coffee

Brew 1 cup (about 240 ml) of strong hot coffee. Use a dark-roast or espresso-style brew for full body and flavor. Keep coffee piping hot.

Assemble Drink

3

Sweeten

Add 1 tsp packed brown sugar to the warmed glass.

4

Add coffee

Pour the hot coffee into the glass over the sugar, leaving roughly 1–1.5 inches (2.5–4 cm) of headspace for the whiskey and cream (about 1 cup of coffee total). Stir with a bar spoon until the sugar is fully dissolved.

5

Add whiskey

Pour 1.5 oz Irish whiskey into the sweetened coffee and gently stir once to combine.

Cream Topping

6

Lightly whip cream

Place 2 tbsp heavy cream (and 1/8 tsp vanilla if using) in a small bowl. Whip briefly with a fork or small whisk until it is slightly thickened but still pourable — it should hold a soft ribbon. Do not overwhip; you want it pourable so it floats.

7

Float cream

Pour the cream gently over the back of a spoon held just above the coffee surface so it floats as a distinct layer on top. Aim for about 1/2 inch (1–1.5 cm) of cream.

8

Garnish

Lightly dust the cream with a pinch (about 1/4 tsp) of freshly grated nutmeg or a small sprinkle of cocoa powder, if desired.

Serve

9

Serve immediately while the coffee is hot beneath the chilled cream layer. Drink through the cream so you get the hot sweetened coffee and whiskey in the first sip and the cool cream on the finish.
