Cocktail
Chill glass
Place an old-fashioned glass or rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
Measure and combine
In a mixing glass, add 2 oz Weller Special Reserve bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes aromatic bitters, 1 dash orange bitters, and 0.25 oz simple syrup.
Stir with ice
Add 6 large ice cubes to the mixing glass. Stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 30–45 rotations) until well chilled and slightly diluted—mix should reach roughly 20–25°F cooler than room temperature.
Strain
Using a julep strainer or Hawthorne strainer, strain the chilled cocktail from the mixing glass into the prepared old-fashioned glass over the large ice cube (or neat, if preferred).
Garnish
Express orange oils
Hold the orange peel with the outside (zesty) side facing down above the drink. Give the peel a quick, firm squeeze to express the citrus oils over the surface of the cocktail, then run the peel around the glass rim to coat it with oil.
Finish
Drop the expressed orange peel into the drink or hang it on the rim. Optionally thread a Luxardo cherry on a pick and rest it on the rim or drop it into the glass. Serve immediately.
