Soda Base

Method

Prepare Cherry Syrup

1

Combine syrups and sugar

In a small saucepan, combine granulated sugar, light corn syrup (or simple syrup), and maraschino cherry syrup. Warm gently over medium-low heat, stirring until the sugar dissolves and the mixture is smooth (about 2–3 minutes). Do not boil.

2

Add flavor and acid

Remove the pan from heat. Stir in the cherry extract and citric acid (if using) until fully incorporated. This creates a concentrated cherry-flavored syrup that mimics Code Red's cherry note and tartness.

3

Allow the syrup to cool to room temperature (about 10 minutes). If needed, chill briefly in the refrigerator to speed up cooling. The syrup should be cool before mixing with carbonated ingredients to preserve fizz.

Assemble Soda

4

In a large chilled mixing glass or pitcher, combine the carbonated water and lemon-lime soda. Gently stir once or twice to mix — avoid vigorous stirring to preserve carbonation.

5

Add the cooled cherry syrup to the soda mixture. Stir gently and taste. If you want a stronger, more authentic citrus-Mountain Dew backbone, add up to 1/2 cup of actual Mountain Dew or 1/4 cup more citrus soda concentrate; stir gently after adding.

6

If the drink tastes flat or too sweet, adjust brightness with an additional 1/8–1/4 tsp citric acid (dissolve in a few drops of water first) or a squeeze of fresh lime (about 1/2 tsp juice).

7

Add 2 drops of red food coloring and stir gently to achieve Code Red's vivid color. Add ice to the serving glass or pitcher as desired.

Serve

8

Pour the assembled soda into two tall glasses filled with ice (about 1/2 cup ice per glass).

9

Garnish each glass with a maraschino cherry on a pick. Serve immediately while fizzy.
