Method
Base Electrolyte Solution
Dissolve sweeteners and salts
In a heatproof measuring cup or small pot, combine 1 cup hot water, 1 cup granulated sugar and 2 tablespoons light corn syrup. Stir until the sugar has fully dissolved (about 1–2 minutes of stirring).
Add 1 teaspoon table salt and 1 teaspoon baking soda to the warm syrup. Stir thoroughly until both salts are dissolved. The baking soda helps with slight alkalinity and can reduce sourness; ensure it dissolves completely.
Electrolyte & Acid Balance
Stir in 1 teaspoon potassium chloride until dissolved. If using calcium/magnesium powder, add 1 teaspoon now and stir to dissolve. These add potassium, calcium and magnesium to more closely mimic sports-drink electrolytes.
Add 1 tablespoon citric acid to the mixture and stir well. Citric acid provides tartness and helps stabilize flavor. Taste carefully after mixing (see adjustment step).
Fruit Punch Flavor
In a separate pitcher, pour 1 cup concentrated fruit punch juice. Add 1 teaspoon natural fruit punch flavoring if using, and 2 drops red food coloring for the classic color. Stir to combine.
Combine the warm electrolyte syrup mixture into the pitcher with the concentrated fruit punch and stir to integrate. The warm syrup will help incorporate solids and flavors.
Finish & Chill
Add 4 cups cold water (the 3 cups cold water from ingredients plus the remaining 1 cup filtered water already listed under Base) to the pitcher to bring total volume and dilute to drinking strength. Stir well and taste.
Taste and adjust: if too sweet, add up to 1/4 cup additional cold water. If too tart, add 1–2 teaspoons sugar dissolved in a tablespoon of warm water. If more electrolyte saltiness is desired, add a pinch of salt or 1/8 teaspoon potassium chloride at a time.
Cover and chill in refrigerator for at least 1 hour. Serve cold over ice if desired. Shake or stir before serving, as minerals may settle.
