Method
Cocktail
- 1
Chill glass
Place an old-fashioned glass or rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice and set aside to chill while you prepare the cocktail.
- 2
Combine ingredients
In a mixing glass add Rémy Martin 1738 (2 oz), sweet vermouth (1 oz), orange liqueur (1/2 oz), simple syrup (1/4 oz), and 2 dashes of Angostura bitters.

- 4
Prepare serving glass
Discard ice from the chilled old-fashioned glass if used to chill. Place one large clear ice cube or a couple of fresh large cubes in the glass.
- 5
Strain and garnish
Using a julep or hawthorne strainer, strain the cocktail into the prepared glass over the fresh ice. Express the oils from an orange twist over the surface of the drink by holding the twist over the glass and giving it a sharp fold, then rub the peel around the rim and drop it into the cocktail as garnish.
- 6
Optional smoky finish
If using the smoked cinnamon stick, briefly pass it through a small torch flame or hold it near a smoking source to warm and ignite slightly, then place it across the glass to impart a subtle smoky aroma. For a warmed variation, add 1 oz hot water to the mixing glass before stirring to create a gently warmed cognac cocktail; stir 10–15 seconds and strain into warmed glass.

Serve immediately and enjoy responsibly.
