- 1
Prepare espresso
Pull a fresh espresso shot (about 0.75 oz). If you don't have an espresso machine, use a very strong concentrated cold-brew or ristretto. Let it rest 10–20 seconds so it cools slightly but still warm; this helps bloom aromatics when shaken.
- 2
Chill and measure
Fill a cocktail shaker about two-thirds with ice. Measure and add 1.5 oz Mr Black coffee liqueur, 1 oz aged rum, and 0.75 oz espresso into the shaker. If you prefer a sweeter drink, add 0.25 oz simple syrup.
- 3
Shake hard
Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–18 seconds. A hard shake aerates the mixture and creates a light, frothy crema from the espresso and liqueur.
- 4
Strain
Double-strain the cocktail into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass (or over a large ice cube in an Old Fashioned glass if you prefer it on the rocks) using a fine mesh strainer to remove ice shards and produce a silky texture.
- 5
Garnish
Float three coffee beans on top of the crema as a classic garnish. Optionally express an orange peel over the glass and discard or rub the rim for a citrus aromatic note.
- 6
Serve immediately while the crema is fresh. Enjoy.
