Preparation

Cocktail

1. Prepare glass

Chill a coupe or martini glass by placing it in the freezer for 5–10 minutes or filling it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail.

2. Build and shake

Add the cognac, Grand Marnier, fresh lemon juice, and simple syrup into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker with ice (about 3/4 full or roughly 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker becomes very cold and slightly frosted.

3. Strain

Dump the ice or water from the chilled glass if used. Double-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a cocktail strainer and a fine mesh strainer to remove small ice shards for a silky texture.

4. Garnish

Express an orange peel over the surface of the drink by holding it skin-side down and giving it a firm twist to release the oils. Rub the rim of the glass with the peel and drop the peel into the drink or lay it on the rim as garnish.

5. Serve

Serve immediately. Optionally, accompany with a small bowl of orange segments or a delicate biscuit. This recipe yields one cocktail.
