1

Prepare fruit and herbs

Hull and quarter the strawberries. Cut the Thai/key limes in half (or into 6–8 wedges if using a larger lime). Pick and lightly rinse the basil leaves; reserve one small sprig for garnish.

2

Muddle

In a sturdy mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add the hulled and quartered strawberries, lime pieces (remove any large seeds), granulated sugar, and 6 basil leaves. Use a muddler to gently press and twist until the strawberries are broken down and the lime releases its juice and oils from the peel and the basil aromas are released — about 10–15 firm presses. Avoid pulverizing the basil into a paste; you want fragrant oils, not bitterness.

3

Build the drink

Add 2 oz cachaça (or light rum) and 0.5 oz simple syrup to the muddled mixture. Fill the shaker or mixing glass halfway with crushed ice. Shake vigorously for about 8–10 seconds to chill and slightly dilute the mixture.

4

Strain and finish

Fill a rocks glass or highball with crushed ice. Double-strain the shaken mixture over the ice (use a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer if available) to remove seeds and large solids, leaving a smooth, slightly pulpy base in the glass.

5

Top and garnish

Top the cocktail with 2 oz chilled Topo Chico (or sparkling mineral water) to add effervescence. Gently slap the reserved basil sprig between your palms to release aroma and place it on top as garnish along with a lime wheel or wedge. Optionally, tuck a thin strawberry slice on the rim.

6

Serve

Serve immediately with a short stirring straw so the drinker can lightly mix bubbles into the base as they sip. Enjoy within 10 minutes for best texture and aroma.
