Fresh Orange Juice
Method
Fresh Orange Juice
Prepare oranges
Wash the oranges under cool running water to remove any residue. Pat them dry with a clean towel. Roll each orange firmly on the countertop with the palm of your hand to soften and release more juice.
Cut and juice
Cut each orange in half crosswise. Using a manual citrus juicer or an electric citrus press, juice all orange halves into a large measuring cup or bowl. If using a blender, segment the oranges (remove large seeds) and pulse briefly, then strain through a fine mesh sieve to remove pulp if you prefer smoother juice.
Strain and adjust
If you prefer pulp-free juice, pour the juice through a fine-mesh sieve into a clean pitcher, pressing gently on the solids to extract remaining liquid. Taste the juice. If it tastes slightly flat or overly sweet, stir in up to 1 teaspoon lemon juice to brighten the flavor. If it’s too tart for your taste, dissolve 1 teaspoon granulated sugar in 1 tablespoon warm water and stir into the juice; adjust to taste.
Dilute and chill
If the juice is very strong, add up to 1 cup cold water to dilute to your preferred strength. Stir well. Refrigerate for at least 10 minutes to chill, or serve immediately over ice (use the 1 cup ice cubes).
Serve
Pour the orange juice into glasses over ice. Garnish each glass with a sprig of fresh mint if desired. Serve cold and enjoy.
