Bread

Method

Prepare the bread

  1. 1

    Preheat oven

Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C). Position a rack in the middle of the oven.

  2. 2

Cut the half-baguette into 3 equal pieces (each about 4–5 inches long). Then slice each piece horizontally almost through so you have two halves, or for classic open-faced garlic bread slice each piece lengthwise into two even halves.

Make garlic butter

  1. 3

In a small bowl, combine the softened butter and minced garlic. Mash together with a fork until smooth and evenly mixed.

  2. 4

Stir in the chopped parsley, grated Parmesan (if using), salt, black pepper, and lemon juice (if using). Taste and adjust seasoning; the mixture should be well seasoned but not overly salty.

Assemble

  1. 5

Spread an even layer (about 1 tablespoon) of the garlic butter mixture over each cut surface of the 3 bread pieces. For a richer finish, open-faced halves can receive the full amount; if you kept the pieces whole, spread on the top and sides as desired.

  2. 6

Brush the outsides/lightly exposed crust with the teaspoon of olive oil and sprinkle the dried oregano or Italian seasoning evenly over the buttered surfaces (optional).

Bake

  1. 7

Place the assembled pieces on a baking sheet lined with foil or parchment, buttered side up. Bake in the preheated oven for 8–10 minutes, until the butter is melted and the edges are golden.

  2. 8

If you want a crisp, slightly browned top, switch the oven to broil on high and broil for 1–2 minutes more, watching closely to avoid burning.

Serve

  1. 9

Remove from the oven and let cool for 1–2 minutes. Cut each piece into 2–3 serving slices if desired. Serve warm.
