Method
Cocktail Preparation
Measure and Combine
Chill a rocks glass by filling it with ice or placing it in the freezer briefly. In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker, add 2 oz rye whiskey, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.5 oz Campari, 0.25 oz pure maple syrup, and 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice.
Add Bitters
Add 2 dashes of Angostura bitters to the mixing glass.
Shake or Stir
If you prefer a slightly aerated, colder cocktail with a touch of dilution, add plenty of ice to the shaker and shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds. For a silkier, clearer drink, fill the mixing glass with ice and stir for 20–30 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.
Prepare Glass
Discard ice from the chilled rocks glass and add a large ice cube (or a few large cubes).
Strain
Double-strain (if shaken) or fine-strain (if stirred) the cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube.
Serving
Serve immediately. The Nor ' Eastah is best enjoyed slightly chilled with the bright citrus top notes and the warm spice of rye balanced by Campari's bitter orange and the soft sweetness of maple. Adjust maple syrup to taste if you prefer it sweeter.
