Method
Blue Layer
Prepare blue layer
Combine 1 oz light rum, 0.5 oz blue curaçao, 0.5 oz fresh lime juice and 0.25 oz simple syrup with 3 oz crushed ice in a cocktail shaker or small blender. Shake (or blend briefly) until well chilled and slightly slushy. Strain carefully into the bottom of the chilled highball or hurricane glass, filling about one quarter of the glass. Set aside and place glass briefly in the freezer or allow layer to settle while preparing the next layer.
Green Layer
Prepare green layer
Rinse and dry the shaker. Combine 1 oz light rum, 0.5 oz melon liqueur, 0.25 oz fresh lime juice, 0.25 oz simple syrup and 3 oz crushed ice. Shake or blend until slushy and chilled. To layer, slowly pour the green mixture over the back of a bar spoon held just above the blue layer (about 1/2"–1" above it). Pour gently so it floats and creates a distinct second band. Fill to about half the glass. Chill briefly if needed.
Yellow/Orange Layer
Prepare yellow/orange layer
Clean the shaker. Combine 1 oz light rum, 0.5 oz orange liqueur, 0.25 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz fresh orange juice and 0.25 oz simple syrup with 3 oz crushed ice. Shake or blend to a slushy consistency. Using the bar spoon technique, slowly layer this mixture over the green layer so it forms the third band (about three quarters up the glass). Work slowly to keep clean separation.
Red/Pink Layer
Prepare red/pink layer
Rinse the shaker. Combine 1 oz light rum, 0.5 oz grenadine, 0.25 oz fresh lime juice, 0.5 oz strawberry purée or cranberry juice and 0.25 oz simple syrup with 3 oz crushed ice. Shake or blend until slushy. Carefully spoon or pour over the back of the bar spoon to form the top red/pink band. Pour slowly — grenadine tends to sink, so if the red mix is heavier, pour very gently so it stays as a top layer (use a slightly thicker slush to help it float).
