Cocktail
Optional for stirred/strained variation
Method
Cocktail
Build in mixing glass (traditional/stirred)
Add gin, Campari and sweet vermouth to a mixing glass or a sturdy glass tumbler used for stirring.
Add ice
Fill the mixing glass about three-quarters full with large ice cubes or one large sphere. Using large ice chills the drink without diluting it too quickly.
Stir
Stir gently but thoroughly for about 20–30 seconds (roughly 20–30 full revolutions) until the outside of the glass feels cold and the liquid is properly diluted and slightly viscous. Aim for about 20–25% dilution overall depending on ice size and temperature.
Strain into glass
Place a single large ice cube or sphere in an old-fashioned (rocks) glass. Strain the mixed cocktail over the ice using a julep strainer or fine strainer so only liquid goes into the serving glass.
Garnish
Express the orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the surface and giving it a sharp squeeze to spray oils onto the cocktail. Rub the peel on the glass rim and drop the twist into the drink.
Alternative: Build in glass (quick method)
If you prefer not to stir, add gin, Campari and sweet vermouth directly into an old-fashioned glass filled with large ice. Stir gently in the glass for 10–15 seconds to combine and chill, then garnish with the expressed orange peel.
Optional adjustment
If you want a slightly sweeter Negroni, add 1/2 teaspoon (barspoon) of simple syrup to the mixing glass before stirring. Taste before straining and adjust minimally.
