Place a coupe or rocks glass in the freezer for a few minutes or fill it with ice water while you prepare the cocktail to chill it.
Fill a cocktail shaker with ice (about 6 oz of ice).
Add 2 oz blanco tequila, 0.75 oz Cointreau, 0.75 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.25 oz agave syrup (if using) to the shaker. Add 2 dashes of orange bitters if you want an aromatic lift.
Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until the shaker is well chilled and properly diluted (the exterior should frost).
Discard ice/water from the chilled glass. Fine-strain the cocktail into the chilled coupe or a rocks glass over a large ice cube, depending on preference.
Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim and/or a thin orange twist expressed over the drink and placed on top.
Serve immediately.
