Method
Prep
Prepare glass
If you want a salted or Tajín rim, run a lime wedge around the rim of a rocks or coupe glass, then dip the rim into a small plate of coarse salt or Tajín. Fill the glass with ice (if serving on the rocks) and set aside.
Measure out all spirits and juice. Have a cocktail shaker, strainer, and a jigger ready.
Shake & Build
Combine and shake
Add the tequila (2 oz), Cointreau (1 oz), fresh lime juice (1 oz), and simple syrup (0.25 oz, optional) into a cocktail shaker. Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with ice. Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until well chilled and the shaker feels cold to the touch.
Strain
If serving straight up: double-strain into the prepared chilled coupe or rocks glass (without ice). If serving on the rocks: fill the prepared glass with fresh ice and strain the cocktail over the ice.
Top with soda
Gently top the cocktail with approximately 2 oz (about a splash) of chilled soda water to add effervescence. Do not stir vigorously; a light gentle swirl or two will incorporate the soda without flattening it.
Garnish & Serve
Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim or floated on top. Serve immediately.
Taste and adjust: if the cocktail tastes too tart, add a splash more simple syrup (0.25 oz) and gently stir once. If it needs more brightness, express a lime peel over the top before garnishing.
