Board Components
Prepare cheeses
Remove cheeses from the refrigerator 30 minutes before serving to allow them to come to room temperature. Trim rind only if necessary — leave natural rinds intact for flavor and presentation. For easy serving, pre-slice one firm cheese into 8–10 thin slices and score the top of a soft cheese (like a runny goat or Brie) so guests can spoon or spread it.
Slice bread and arrange crackers
Cut the cranberry-walnut bread into 8 slices about 1/2-inch thick. Fan the slices along one edge of the board. Arrange assorted crackers in small stacks around the board, leaving space for cheeses and accompaniments.
Arrange fruit and dried fruit
Rinse and dry fresh fruit. If using grapes, keep small clusters whole. Quarter or slice figs or apples and fan them on the board to make them easy to pick up. Place dried fruits in a small pile near the cheeses for contrasting texture.
Place nuts and pickles
Scatter the mixed nuts in a small bowl or pile them in an open area of the board. Place cornichons or pickled onions in a small ramekin to keep brine off the rest of the board.
Add spreads and honey
Spoon the fruit preserves into one or two small bowls or directly onto the board in shallow piles. Place a small dish of honey with a drizzle or honey dipper nearby for easy serving.
Final touches and seasoning
Tuck cheese knives and spreaders by each cheese. Garnish the board with rosemary or thyme sprigs for aroma. If desired, very lightly drizzle olive oil over firmer cheeses and sprinkle a pinch of sea salt and freshly ground black pepper over sliced apples or firm cheeses to enhance flavor. Ensure plates and napkins are available for guests.
Serving
Serve the board at room temperature. Encourage guests to start with mild cheeses and progress to stronger ones. Replenish items as needed to keep the board abundant and visually appealing.
