Method
Prepare Produce
Wash and Juice
Wash lemons, oranges, and ginger root thoroughly. Halve the lemons and oranges and juice them until you have 1 cup lemon juice and 1 cup orange juice. Strain the juices through a fine-mesh sieve into a measuring cup to remove pulp and seeds.
Peel and Grate Ginger
Peel about 2 tablespoons of ginger flesh using a spoon or peeler. Grate finely using a microplane or fine grater. Measure out 2 tablespoons of grated ginger.
Extract Flavor
Infuse Ginger into Juice
Place the strained lemon and orange juices in a medium mixing bowl or measuring pitcher. Add the 2 tablespoons grated ginger. Use a muddler or the back of a spoon to press and swirl the grated ginger against the sides of the bowl for 30–45 seconds to release more juice and volatile oils.
Optional Heat Extraction
For a stronger ginger profile, gently warm 1/4 cup of the filtered water until just warm (do not boil), add the grated ginger, and let steep for 5 minutes. Strain the warmed ginger water into the juice mixture. Discard solids.
Finish and Balance
Sweeten and Spice
Add 2 tablespoons raw honey to the juice mixture and stir until dissolved. Add 1 teaspoon ground cayenne pepper and 1/4 teaspoon fine sea salt (if using). Stir thoroughly to combine.
Adjust Intensity
Taste the mixture. If the shot is too intense, add up to 3/4 to 1 cup filtered water (start with 1/2 cup) to reach desired heat and acidity balance. Stir and taste again, adjusting honey or cayenne in 1/4 teaspoon increments if needed.
Chill and Strain
For a smooth shot, strain the final mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a clean container to remove ginger fiber and any cayenne clumps. Chill in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes or serve over ice immediately.
Serve
Pour into small 1–2 ounce shot glasses. This recipe yields approximately 10–12 (2-ounce) wellness shots depending on added water. Store any leftover in a sealed bottle in the refrigerator for up to 3 days; shake well before serving.
