Cocktail

Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Build and stir

Add 2 oz benchmark bonded bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 0.25 oz simple syrup and 2 dashes Angostura bitters to a mixing glass. Fill the mixing glass with ice to properly chill and dilute.

  2. 2

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture for 20–30 seconds (about 20–30 full turns), until the outside of the mixing glass feels well chilled and the liquid is appropriately diluted and slightly viscous.

  3. 3

    Prepare glass

Place a single large ice cube into an old fashioned (rocks) glass.

  4. 4

    Strain

Using a julep strainer or Hawthorne strainer, strain the chilled mixture from the mixing glass into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube.

  5. 5

    Garnish

Skewer or drop one luxardo (maraschino) cherry into the glass. Using a peeler or small knife, cut a 1.5–2 inch orange peel. Express the orange peel over the drink by holding it skin-side down about 2–3 inches above the glass and giving it a firm twist to spray the oils onto the surface, then rub the rim with the peel and drop it into the glass or rest it on the rim.

Tools & Final

  1. 6

Serve immediately with a short straw if desired. Encourage sipping slowly to enjoy the bonded bourbon's concentrated character balanced by the sweet vermouth and the bitters.
