Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Chill Glass

Place a rocks glass in the freezer or fill it with ice water to chill while you prepare the cocktail.

  2. 2

    Combine Ingredients

In a mixing glass or cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice, add 2 oz Michter's 10 Year Bourbon, 1 oz sweet vermouth, 2 dashes Angostura bitters, 1 dash orange bitters and 0.25 oz simple syrup if you prefer a slightly sweeter, rounder profile.

  3. 3

    Stir

Using a bar spoon, stir the mixture gently but thoroughly for 20–30 seconds (about 30–40 rotations) until well chilled and properly diluted — the mixing glass should feel very cold to the touch.

  4. 4

    Prepare Glass

Discard the ice water from the chilled rocks glass (or remove the glass from the freezer) and place a large ice cube into the glass.

  5. 5

    Strain

Strain the stirred cocktail into the prepared rocks glass over the large ice cube using a julep strainer or hawthorne strainer to catch any small ice shards.

Garnish & Serve

  1. 6

    Express Orange Peel

Hold an orange peel about 3–4 inches above the drink with the outer (zesty) side facing down. Gently give the peel a firm twist to express the oils over the surface of the cocktail, then rub the peel's rim along the glass edge.

  2. 7

    Garnish

Drop the expressed orange peel into the drink or rest it on the ice as a garnish.

  3. 8

Serve immediately and enjoy slowly. The cocktail highlights the rich, caramel and baking-spice notes of Michter's 10 Year; adjust the 0.25 oz simple syrup or vermouth to taste for desired sweetness and balance.
