Method
Prepare syrups & small components
- 1
Make demerara simple syrup
If you don't have pre-made syrup, combine equal parts demerara sugar and water (by weight or volume) in a small saucepan. Heat gently, stirring until the sugar fully dissolves. Cool to room temperature before using.
- 2
If using activated charcoal for deep black color, measure a very small pinch (food grade). For a more subtle darkening, use black cocoa powder instead. Both are optional; charcoal will strongly darken the cocktail and may slightly affect texture.
Cocktail assembly
- 3
Dry shake (no ice)
Add the navy‑strength gin, dry gin, crème de violette, maraschino liqueur, demerara simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, egg white, and a pinch of activated charcoal or black cocoa to a cocktail shaker. Dry shake vigorously for 20–30 seconds to emulsify the egg white and incorporate the color evenly.
- 4
Wet shake (with ice)
Add a generous handful of ice to the shaker. Shake again very hard for 15–20 seconds until the shaker is cold to the touch and the exterior shows condensation. This chills and dilutes the cocktail to proper strength while building a silky foam from the egg white.
- 5
Double strain and finish
Double strain the cocktail through a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass to remove ice shards and any charcoal clumps. If desired, gently brush a faint sprinkle of edible silver luster dust across the foam for a crystalline shimmer.

Optional aroma: express a lemon peel over the drink before dropping it in to release oils that complement the floral violet and bright citrus notes.
