Dark Crystal Cocktail

Method

Dark Crystal Cocktail

1

Prepare glass

Chill an old-fashioned glass or rocks glass by filling it with ice and setting aside while you mix the cocktail.

2

Build and shake

In a cocktail shaker, combine 2 tablespoons dark rum, 1 tablespoon coffee liqueur, 1 ounce cooled espresso, 1/2 ounce fresh lime juice, 1/2 teaspoon simple syrup and a pinch of activated charcoal (if using). Fill the shaker with ice (about 1 cup). Secure the lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until well chilled and slightly diluted.

3

Strain

Discard the ice from the chilled serving glass. Double-strain the shaken mixture into the glass over fresh large ice cubes (or a single large ice sphere) to keep the drink cold without over-dilution.

4

Float overproof rum

Carefully pour 1 teaspoon overproof rum over the back of a bar spoon held just above the drink surface so it floats as a dark glossy layer (this creates the 'crystal' shimmer).

5

Garnish and finish

Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink by holding the peel skin-side down above the glass and giving it a firm twist, then rub the peel on the rim and drop it into the cocktail. Optionally float 2 coffee beans on top for aroma and visual contrast.

6

Serve

Serve immediately. Advise guests to sip slowly — if you wish, the overproof rum can be ignited briefly for a dramatic effect (exercise caution and avoid ignition if indoors or near flammable materials).
