Choose either gin or vodka (2 oz) based on preference. Pour the spirit into a highball glass.

Add citrus
Add 1/2 oz fresh lime juice to the glass to brighten the drink.

Add ice and mixer
Fill the glass with ice (to taste). Gently pour 4 oz tonic water for gin or 4 oz club soda (or cola for a sweeter vodka version) down the side of the glass to preserve carbonation.

Stir gently once or twice with a bar spoon to combine spirit, lime and mixer without flattening the carbonation.

Garnish with a lime wheel or wedge on the rim. Serve immediately with a straw if desired.
