Garlic Butter

Method

Garlic Butter

  1. 1

    Soften and combine

Remove butter from the refrigerator about 20–30 minutes before starting so it softens to room temperature. If short on time, cut butter into small cubes to soften more quickly.

  2. 2

In a small bowl, mash the softened butter with a fork until smooth. Stir in the extra-virgin olive oil to loosen the texture and improve spreadability.

  3. 3

Add the finely minced garlic, chopped parsley, chopped basil (if using), lemon zest, salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes (if using). Mix thoroughly so the garlic and herbs are evenly distributed. Taste and adjust salt/pepper as needed.

Assembling & Baking

  1. 4

    Prepare the oven and bread

Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or aluminum foil for easier cleanup. Slice the baguette in half lengthwise (or into 1-inch thick diagonal slices for pull-apart style), cutting through the top so you have two open faces.

  2. 5

Spread the prepared garlic butter evenly over the cut sides of the bread, covering all edges. If using slices, spread butter on each slice's cut surface. Use all the garlic butter for a pronounced flavor or reserve a tablespoon for serving if desired.

  3. 6

If making cheesy garlic bread, sprinkle shredded mozzarella evenly over the buttered surface, then scatter the grated Parmesan on top for extra flavor.

  4. 7

    Bake

Place the assembled bread on the prepared baking sheet and bake in the preheated oven for 10–12 minutes, until the bread is hot and the butter is melted. If using mozzarella, bake until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly (about 10–12 minutes).

  5. 8

    Broil for finish (optional)

For a golden, slightly crisp top, switch the oven to broil on high for 1–2 minutes — watch closely to prevent burning. Remove when edges are golden-brown and cheese (if used) is lightly browned.

  6. 9

Remove from the oven and let rest for 1–2 minutes. Garnish with the reserved fresh parsley. For a whole loaf, slice into portions and serve warm.

Serving Suggestions

  1. 10

Serve the garlic bread warm as a side for pasta, soup, salad, or as an appetizer. Provide additional grated Parmesan and red pepper flakes at the table for guests to customize.
