Method
Base Cocktail
Combine and shake
Add dark rum, fresh lime juice, orange juice, pineapple juice, falernum, and simple syrup to a cocktail shaker filled with ice. Shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds until chilled and slightly frothy.
Strain
Double-strain the shaken cocktail over the prepared crushed ice, pouring it so the liquid settles evenly.
Lava Garnish & Flame
Float overproof rum
Using a small spoon or a chilled metal spoon held over the surface, gently pour the overproof rum to float a thin layer (about 0.5 oz) on top of the drink. If you want a slightly colored flame sheen, you can first dash a tiny amount of absinthe (0.08 oz) into the overproof rum before floating, but this is optional. Do not mix—floating keeps the fuel layer separate.
Ignite safely
Using a long lighter or match, carefully ignite the floated overproof rum. The flame should be low and blue-orange. Keep your face and any flammable materials back. Do not attempt if you are uncomfortable with open flame. Maintain the flame only briefly (5–10 seconds) to achieve the dramatic effect; blow it out gently before drinking. If the flame is too large, extinguish immediately and wait 10 seconds before relighting or serving.
Final presentation
Once the flame is extinguished, serve immediately with a straw or encourage the guest to sip carefully. The grenadine lava will have left a streaking red column through the drink and the floated rum will add a topical aromatic hit. Stir lightly if the guest prefers a combined flavor.
Safety & Cleanup
Always perform the flaming step on a stable, non-flammable surface away from curtains, paper, or anything that could catch fire. Keep a damp towel or fire extinguisher nearby. Do not drink while the flame is still burning. Allow the glass to cool for a few seconds after extinguishing the flame before handing to a guest. Clean any spills of overproof rum immediately to avoid residual fire risk.
