Method

Basic Tea Options

1

Boil water

Bring 4 cups water to a rolling boil in a kettle or small saucepan over high heat.

2

Steep black tea

For a strong hot black tea: place 2 black tea bags into a heatproof teapot or large heatproof pitcher. Pour 2 cups of the boiling water over the black tea bags. Steep 3–5 minutes depending on desired strength (3 minutes for lighter, 5 minutes for strong). Remove and discard tea bags.

3

Steep green tea

For green tea: bring the remaining 2 cups water off the boil and let it cool 1 minute (to about 175–185°F / 80–85°C). Place 2 green tea bags in a separate cup or pot and pour the slightly cooled water over them. Steep 2–3 minutes. Remove tea bags to avoid bitterness.

4

Steep herbal tea

For herbal tea (caffeine-free): pour 2 cups boiling water over 2 herbal tea bags in a teapot or mug. Steep 5–7 minutes for full flavor, then remove tea bags.

Milk & creamy options

5

Warm or steam milk

Gently warm 1 cup whole milk (or alternative milk) on the stove over low heat or in the microwave for 30–45 seconds until steaming but not boiling. If you want steamed milk, use a milk frother or steam wand until lightly foamy (about 20–30 seconds).

6

Make a creamy tea (optional)

To prepare a milk-forward drink (e.g., tea latte): combine 1 cup of brewed black tea with 1/2 to 1 cup warmed milk. Add 2 tablespoons heavy cream for extra richness if desired. Stir gently to combine and maintain temperature.

Sweeteners & Flavorings

7

Sweeten to taste

Stir in granulated sugar (start with 1–2 tsp), honey (1–2 tsp), or maple syrup (1 tsp) while the tea is hot so the sweetener dissolves fully. Taste and adjust as needed.

8

Add vanilla and spices

For a flavored cup: add 1 tsp vanilla extract or a pinch (1/4–1/2 tsp) ground cinnamon to the tea. Alternatively, drop in a cinnamon stick to steep with the black tea or herbal infusion for a warm spiced note.

9

Citrus & ginger

To make lemon- or ginger-infused tea: add 1–2 lemon slices or 2 slices fresh ginger to the steeping tea. For a stronger ginger taste, simmer ginger slices in the water for 3–5 minutes before adding tea bags.

Garnishes & Extras

10

Finish and serve

Ladle or pour the brewed tea into cups. Garnish each cup with a fresh mint sprig, a lemon wedge, or a cinnamon stick as desired. If serving a milk tea, pour warmed milk over the brewed tea and top with foamed milk if available.

Serving suggestions

Serve hot teas immediately while warm. Offer sweeteners, lemon wedges, and milk on the side so guests can customize. Discard used tea bags and any leftover brewed tea after 12 hours.
