Method
Prepare Coconut Water
Open the coconut
Stabilize the young coconut on a cutting board. Using a heavy chef's knife or cleaver, carefully shave off the top husk to expose the inner shell. Tap the top of the coconut with the knife or a sturdy spoon around the center point to create a small opening, then pry open a hole large enough to fit a straw or pour. If you prefer safety, use a small cordless saw or a coconut opening tool.
Extract the water
Hold the coconut over a bowl or measuring cup and pour the clear coconut water out. Alternatively, insert a clean straw and drink directly. Strain the liquid through a fine mesh sieve into the bowl to remove any shell particles. Typical yield from one young coconut is about 300–400 ml (1.25–1.75 cups).
Assemble Drink
Chill and sweeten (optional)
If the coconut water is not cold, refrigerate for at least 30 minutes or pour over ice (about 1 cup). For a flavor boost, stir in fresh lime juice (1 tablespoon) and honey or agave (1 teaspoon). Taste and adjust: add more lime for brightness or up to 1 tablespoon sweetener if you prefer sweeter.
Add finishing touches
Add a pinch of sea salt if you want an electrolyte boost, and gently bruise mint leaves between your palms and add them to the glass for aroma. Stir gently to combine. Serve immediately in a chilled glass with ice and a straw.
