Whisky Smash
Method
Whisky Smash
- 1
Prepare glass
Chill an Old Fashioned glass briefly by filling with ice and setting aside while you prepare the cocktail (or place it in the freezer for 5–10 minutes).
- 2
Muddle mint and simple syrup
In a mixing glass or shaker, add the 8 fresh mint leaves and 0.75 oz simple syrup. Gently muddle the mint with a muddler or the back of a spoon about 6–8 times—press just enough to release the oils and aroma without tearing the leaves into small bits.
- 3
Add lemon and whisky
Add 0.75 oz fresh lemon juice to the muddled mint and syrup, then pour in 2 oz Maker's Mark bourbon whiskey. Add a few large ice cubes to the shaker.
- 4
Shake and chill
Shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds until the outside of the shaker is cold and well mixed. This both chills and slightly dilutes the drink.
- 5
Prepare glass and fill with crushed ice
Discard the chilling ice from the chilled Old Fashioned glass. Fill the glass with about 1 cup of crushed ice, leaving room at the top for pouring and garnish.
- 6
Double-strain and serve
Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared glass over the crushed ice to keep most of the muddled leaf pieces out (use a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer or pour carefully).
