Method
Prepare Glass
Chill and salt the rim
Place a small plate or shallow bowl nearby and spread the salt on it. Run the lime wedge around the outside rim of your chilled margarita or coupe glass to moisten it, then dip the rim lightly into the salt so it adheres evenly. Set the glass aside.
Mix Cocktail
Fill a cocktail shaker about two-thirds full with ice cubes.
Add the tequila (2 oz), fresh lime juice (1 oz), and orange liqueur (1 oz) to the shaker. If you prefer a slightly sweeter margarita, add 0.5 oz simple syrup.
Secure the shaker lid and shake vigorously for 10–15 seconds (until the outside of the shaker is well chilled). This dilutes and chills the drink appropriately.
If you prefer served 'on the rocks': fill the salted glass with fresh ice and strain the cocktail into the glass over the ice. If you prefer 'straight up': double-strain (using a fine mesh strainer if available) into the chilled, salted glass without ice.
Garnish with the reserved lime wedge or a lime wheel on the rim and serve immediately.
