Method
Equipment & Prep
Gather equipment
Prepare a drip brewer (pour-over cone or automatic drip machine), a paper filter or metal filter sized for your brewer, a kettle (preferably with a gooseneck spout for pour-over), a scale, grinder, timer, and a serving carafe or cup.
Measure & heat water
Measure 300 ml brewing water plus about 60 ml for rinsing. Heat water to just off boil, about 92–96°C (195–205°F). If you don't have a thermometer, bring to a boil and rest 30 seconds.
Grind beans
Weigh 18 g of fresh whole beans. Grind to a medium-coarse consistency — similar to coarse sand or sea salt. Adjust grind slightly finer or coarser to modify extraction if needed.
Brewing
Prepare filter
Place the paper filter in the cone and set the cone over the carafe or cup. Pour the 60 ml of hot water through the filter to preheat the brewer and rinse any paper taste. Discard rinse water from the carafe.
Add coffee
Place the cone (or basket) on the scale and add the ground coffee. Tare the scale to zero so you measure only added water.
Bloom
Start timer. Pour 40–50 ml of the hot water evenly over the grounds, just to saturate them. Allow the coffee to bloom for 30–45 seconds. This releases CO2 and improves extraction.
Main pour
After the bloom, pour the remaining water in slow, concentric circles, avoiding pouring directly on the filter. Keep the water level even and aim to finish pouring by 2:30–3:00 minutes total brew time (including bloom). If using an automatic drip machine, start the machine now and allow it to complete its cycle, aiming for a similar brew time.
Drain & serve
Allow all water to drain through the grounds. Remove the cone and discard grounds and used filter. Swirl the carafe gently to mix, then pour into a preheated cup.
Finishing & Serving
Optional additions
Taste the brewed coffee and add optional milk (about 30 ml), sweetener (about 1 tsp), or a pinch of salt to taste. Stir gently to combine.
Serving size
This recipe yields approximately one generous cup (~300 ml). Serve immediately for best flavor; coffee will begin to lose aromatics after 20–30 minutes.
