Method
Coffee
- 1
Measure and grind
Measure 0.5 cup whole Kona coffee beans (about 56–60 g). Grind to a medium-coarse consistency if using a drip or pour-over method, or a medium-fine grind for a filter brewer. For a French press use a coarse grind.
- 2
Boil water
Bring 4 cups (about 960 ml) of filtered water to a boil, then remove from heat and let rest 30 seconds to 45 seconds (target temperature ~200°F / 93°C).
- 3
Bloom (pour-over or pour step for drip)
If using pour-over: place a filter in the dripper and rinse with hot water, then discard rinse. Add the ground Kona coffee to the filter. Pour a small amount of hot water (about 1/2 cup) evenly over the grounds to wet them, and wait 30–45 seconds to allow the coffee to bloom and release gases.
- 4
Brew
Continue pouring the remaining hot water slowly in a circular motion over the grounds until you reach 4 cups total. If using a drip machine, add grounds to the basket and pour the 4 cups of hot water into the reservoir and start the brew. If using a French press, add grounds, pour all the hot water, stir once, place the lid with plunger up, and steep 4 minutes before pressing down slowly.
- 5
Serve
Once brewed, pour the coffee immediately into warmed mugs to preserve aroma and temperature. Taste plain first to appreciate the Kona flavor.
Optional additions

Sweeten and finish
If desired, stir in up to 1 teaspoon granulated sugar while the coffee is hot so it dissolves. Add 2 tablespoons milk or cream (or to taste) and/or 1 teaspoon flavored syrup if you prefer a flavored or sweeter cup. Stir gently and serve immediately.
