Method
Prep
- 1
Remove Spam from the can and slice it. For classic slices, cut the Spam crosswise into 8–10 slices about 1/4–1/3 inch (6–8 mm) thick. Pat slices lightly with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
- 2
Combine dry seasonings: in a small bowl mix black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Set aside.
- 3
If using glaze, whisk together soy sauce and honey (or brown sugar) in a small ramekin and set aside.
Pan-frying Spam
- 4
Heat the pan
Place a large nonstick or cast-iron skillet over medium-high heat. Add 2 tablespoons vegetable oil and heat until shimmering but not smoking (about 1–2 minutes).
- 5
Season slices
Lightly sprinkle both sides of each Spam slice with the prepared dry seasoning mix. This step is optional but adds flavor and helps balance the saltiness.
- 6
Fry Spam
Working in a single layer (you may need to do two batches), place Spam slices in the hot skillet. Fry without moving for 2–3 minutes until the underside is golden brown and crisp. Flip and fry the second side another 2–3 minutes until both sides are caramelized and crisp at the edges. Adjust heat to medium if the oil is spitting or the slices brown too quickly.
- 7
- 8
Drain and rest
Transfer fried Spam to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil for 30–60 seconds.
Garnish & serve
- 9
Arrange Spam on a serving plate. Sprinkle sliced green onions and sesame seeds over the top if using. Serve immediately with steamed rice and fried eggs, or use in sandwiches, musubi, or alongside other breakfast items.
- 10
Leftovers can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3–4 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium heat for 1–2 minutes per side or until warmed through to preserve crispness.
