Basic Toast

Method

Basic Toast

  1. 1

    Prepare bread

Choose 2 slices of bread. If bread is refrigerated, allow to sit 5 minutes at room temperature for even toasting.

  2. 2

    Heat toaster or pan

Set a pop-up toaster to medium (or preheat a skillet over medium heat).

  3. 3

    Toast bread

Place the slices in the toaster and toast until golden brown and crisp, about 2–4 minutes depending on toaster. If using a skillet, melt 1/2 tbs butter in the skillet and toast each side 1–2 minutes until golden.

  4. 4

    Butter and season

Immediately after toasting, spread 1/2 tbs butter on each slice so it melts into the warm bread. Sprinkle a light pinch of salt (total about 1/4 tsp across both slices) to enhance flavor.

Optional Toppings

  1. 5

    Jam or honey

Spread 1 tsp jam or honey per slice over the buttered toast. Serve immediately so jam warms slightly and honey runs.

  2. 6

    Avocado toast

Mash 1/2 cup ripe avocado with 1 tsp olive oil and 1/8 tsp salt. Spread evenly over one or both slices. Finish with a grind of black pepper to taste.

  3. 7

    Cheese melt

Place a slice of cheese on the hot toast. If you want it melted, put the cheese-topped toast under a broiler or in a hot skillet for 30–60 seconds until softened and slightly bubbly.

  4. 8

    Egg-topped toast

Cook one egg to your preference: for fried, heat 1 tsp butter in a small skillet over medium, crack egg in and cook until whites set and yolk reaches desired doneness (about 3–4 minutes for over-easy if flipped). For poached, bring a shallow pot of water to a gentle simmer with 1 tsp vinegar, create a gentle whirlpool and slip in the egg, cooking 3–4 minutes for a runny yolk. Place the egg on the buttered or avocado-covered toast and season with a little salt and pepper.
