Classic Mimosa

Method

Classic Mimosa

  1. 1

    Chill glassware

Place flutes in the refrigerator for at least 15 minutes before serving, or fill them with ice and cold water for 5 minutes then discard the ice and water. This keeps the sparkling wine colder longer.

  2. 2

    Prepare orange juice

If using fresh oranges, roll each orange on the counter to loosen juices, cut in half, and squeeze until you have the required amount (about 4–6 medium oranges for 1 cup). Strain if you prefer pulp-free juice. Chill the juice.

  3. 3

    Assemble mimosa

Pour 1/2 cup (about 120 ml) of chilled sparkling wine into each champagne flute. Gently pour 1/2 cup (about 120 ml) chilled orange juice down the side of the glass to preserve bubbles and avoid overflow. Do not stir.

  4. 4

    Garnish and serve

Add a thin orange slice or twist to the rim of each flute. Serve immediately while sparkling wine is lively.

Optional Enhancements

  1. 5

For a brighter flavor, add a small splash (about 1 teaspoon) of Grand Marnier or another orange liqueur to each glass before adding the sparkling wine. If oranges are very tart, stir 1 teaspoon simple syrup into the orange juice before assembling. For berry variation, muddle a strawberry or drop a raspberry into the bottom of each flute before pouring the liquids.
