Chicken-Fried Steak Ingredients

Method

Cooking Directions

1

Prepare the Steak

Tenderize the beef round steak with a meat mallet until it's about 1/2 inch thick. Season both sides with salt and black pepper.

2

Make the Breading

In a shallow dish, combine the flour, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper. In another dish, whisk together the buttermilk and egg.

3

Coat the Steak

Dip each piece of steak into the buttermilk mixture, then dredge in the seasoned flour until fully coated. Shake off any excess flour.

4

Fry the Steak

In a large skillet, heat the cooking oil over medium-high heat. Fry the coated steaks for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and cooked through. Remove and drain on paper towels.

5

Make the Gravy

In the same skillet, remove excess oil, leaving about 2 tablespoons. Add the additional flour to the skillet and whisk for about 1 minute. Slowly add the milk, whisking constantly until the gravy thickens. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

6

Serve

Serve the chicken-fried steak hot, topped with the gravy.
