Bread & Base

Toppings (choose or combine)

Method

Prepare Bread

1

Split English muffins (if using)

If you chose English muffins, split each muffin into halves with a fork or knife so the interior stays slightly shredded. Leave sliced sandwich bread as-is.

2

Preheat your toaster, toaster oven, or skillet. For a toaster or toaster oven, set to medium (about 2–3 on a 1–5 scale) to achieve golden brown. For a skillet, heat over medium and add 1 tsp butter or olive oil to coat the surface.

Toast or Pan Toast

3

Using a toaster or toaster oven

Place the bread slices or muffin halves in the toaster/toaster oven and toast until golden and crisp at the edges, about 2–4 minutes depending on device and desired doneness.

4

Using a skillet (optional)

Place butter- or oil-coated skillet over medium heat. Add bread slices or muffin halves cut-side down and cook 1–2 minutes until golden and crisp, then flip for 30–45 seconds if you want both sides lightly browned. Remove and place on a plate.

Butter & Prep Toppings

5

While bread is hot, spread about 1/2 tbs of unsalted butter on each slice/half so it melts in. If you prefer olive oil, brush about 1/4 tsp olive oil per piece instead.

6

Prepare chosen toppings: slice tomato, mash avocado with 1/4 tsp salt and a pinch of pepper, measure spreads (jam, peanut butter, cream cheese), and set cheese slices ready. If using herbs or red pepper flakes, have them chopped/measured.

Assemble Variations

7

Sweet - Jam or Honey

Spread 1 tsp jam or 1/2 tbs honey on the buttered toast. Optionally add an extra thin pat of butter or a sprinkle of herbs for contrast. Serve immediately.

8

Nut Butter

Spread 1 tsp peanut butter or nut butter across the toast. Top with a drizzle of honey or sliced banana (not included) if desired.

9

Cream Cheese & Tomato

Spread 1 tsp cream cheese over the toast, top with a tomato slice, sprinkle 1/8 tsp salt and a grind of black pepper, and garnish with chopped chives or parsley.

10

Avocado Toast

Mash the avocado with 1/8 tsp salt and a pinch of pepper. Spread the mashed avocado evenly across the toast. Finish with red pepper flakes (0.25 tsp) and chopped herbs if using.

11

Cheesy Toast

Place a slice of cheese on hot toast so it softens and begins to melt. For a meltier result, place assembled toast under a broiler for 30–60 seconds until the cheese bubbles (watch closely).

Serve

12

Arrange toast or English muffin halves on a plate. Serve immediately while warm. Offer additional salt, pepper, jam, or butter at the table for guests to adjust.

13

Store any unused toppings (jam, butter, cream cheese, mashed avocado) refrigerated in airtight containers. Toast is best eaten fresh.
