Method

Cocktail

  1. 1

    Prepare the glass

Run the lime wedge around the outer rim of a coupe or rocks glass (or margarita glass). Spread the coarse salt on a small plate and dip the moistened rim into the salt so it adheres evenly. Set the glass aside.

  2. 2

    Combine ingredients

Fill a cocktail shaker with the ice. Add 2 oz blanco tequila, 1 oz Cointreau (or triple sec), 1 oz fresh lime juice, and 0.25 oz agave syrup if you prefer a slightly sweeter margarita.

  3. 3

    Shake

Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for about 10–15 seconds (until the shaker is well-chilled and slightly frosted). This chills and dilutes the drink to the proper balance.

  4. 4

    Strain and serve

Double-strain the cocktail into the prepared glass over fresh ice (for a rocks-style margarita) or without ice for a coupe presentation. Garnish with the reserved lime wedge on the rim.

  5. 5

    Optional adjustments

Taste and adjust: for more sweetness add another 0.25 oz agave syrup; for a stronger citrus punch increase fresh lime juice by 0.25 oz. If you prefer a frozen margarita, blend the ingredients with 1 to 1 1/2 cups of ice until smooth.
