Method
Sandwich components
Prepare cheese blend
In a small bowl, combine shredded mozzarella and shredded sharp cheddar. Toss lightly so the two cheeses are evenly mixed.
Prepare bread
Spread the softened unsalted butter evenly on the outside faces of both bread slices. This will be the toasting side.
Toast bread and melt cheese
Heat a nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the two bread slices butter-side-down on the skillet. On one slice (which will be the bottom when assembling), immediately pile the sliced ham evenly. On top of the ham, spread the shredded cheese blend in an even layer. Cover the skillet with a lid or large metal bowl for 1.5–2 minutes to help the cheese melt; monitor so the bread doesn't burn. Once the cheese is melted and the bread underside is golden, remove from heat. Meanwhile, if the top slice is not yet toasted to your liking, flip it butter-side-down briefly until golden (about 30–45 seconds).
Season tomato
Place tomato slices on a plate and sprinkle with salt (about 1/8–1/4 tsp) and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
Assemble sandwich
On the cheese-topped bread slice (still warm), layer the seasoned tomato slices, then the lettuce leaves. Drizzle the Creamy Italian dressing evenly over the lettuce and tomato (about 1–2 tablespoons). If using, add pickle slices and/or a thin smear of yellow mustard. Top with the second toasted bread slice, buttered side out.
Finish and serve
Press the sandwich gently to compress the stack. Using a sharp knife, cut the sandwich in half diagonally. Serve immediately while cheese is warm and melted.
Optional/add-ons
To add pickles or spice: layer dill pickle slices between the tomato and lettuce or spread yellow mustard on the inside of the top bread slice before closing. If desired, sprinkle a pinch (about 1/8 tsp) of hot pepper flakes over the cheese right before covering to add heat.
