Preparation of Ice Cream Base

1. Combine Base Ingredients

In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Whisk together until the sugar is fully dissolved.

2. Heat Mixture

Place the saucepan over medium heat and gently heat the mixture, stirring occasionally. Do not let it boil. Once the mixture is warm and sugar is dissolved, remove from heat.

3. Cool the Mixture

Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature. Once cooled, cover it and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or overnight for best results.

Churning the Ice Cream

4. Churn the Ice Cream

After the mixture has chilled, pour it into an ice cream maker. Churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions until the ice cream reaches a soft-serve consistency.

5. Add Mix-Ins

If desired, add your choice of optional mix-ins (chocolate chips, crushed nuts, or fruit puree) during the last few minutes of churning.

Freezing

6. Transfer to Container

Once churned, transfer the ice cream to an airtight container. Smooth the top with a spatula.

7. Freeze

Cover the container with a lid and freeze for at least 4 hours, or until firm.
