Oatmeal base

Method

Oatmeal base

1

Measure ingredients

Measure 1 cup rolled oats and 1.5 cups of your chosen liquid (milk for creamier texture, water for lighter).

2

Combine and heat

In a small saucepan, combine the oats, liquid, and 1 tsp salt. Place over medium-high heat and bring to a gentle simmer, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

3

Cook

Once simmering, reduce heat to medium-low. Cook, stirring every 30 seconds, until the oats reach your desired consistency: about 5–7 minutes for rolled oats. If the mixture becomes too thick, add up to 2–4 tbsp additional liquid and stir to loosen.

4

Finish and sweeten

Remove from heat. Stir in 1 tbsp unsalted butter or oil if using for extra richness, and 1 tsp sugar or sweetener if desired. Taste and adjust salt or sweetness.

Topping

5

Toast almond flakes

Place 2 tbsp almond flakes in a small dry skillet over medium heat. Toast, stirring or shaking the pan, for 1–2 minutes until fragrant and lightly golden. Watch closely to avoid burning. Remove from heat and set aside.

6

Prepare fruit (optional)

If using fruit, slice or chop 1/2 cup fresh fruit (banana, berries, or apple) and set aside.

7

Assemble and serve: Spoon cooked oatmeal into a bowl. Top with toasted almond flakes, prepared fruit if using, a drizzle of 1 tbsp maple syrup or honey if desired, and a sprinkle of 1/4 tsp ground cinnamon. Serve immediately.
