Coconut Water
If using packaged coconut water
Method
Coconut Water
Open the coconut
Place the young green coconut on a stable cutting board. Using a heavy knife (cleaver) or a cleaver/machete, carefully shave away the top green husk until you expose the hard shell, then strike the top at a slight angle to create an opening. Alternatively, if the coconut vendor has already removed the husk, tap the top of the hard shell with the back of a heavy knife until it cracks and pry open a hole large enough to pour.
Extract the water
Hold the coconut over a clean bowl or pitcher and pour the coconut water through a fine sieve to remove any shell particles. You should yield about 1 to 1.5 cups of fresh coconut water from one young coconut.
Optional light seasoning and chill
Taste the coconut water. If desired, stir in up to 1 teaspoon simple syrup or honey for sweetness and a pinch (1/4 tsp) of salt to enhance electrolytes. Add 6 fresh mint leaves and gently bruise them with the back of a spoon before stirring to release aroma. Chill briefly or serve over ice.
Serve
Fill a tall glass with ice (about 1 cup), pour the fresh coconut water over the ice (about 1 to 1.5 cups), add the mint leaves and squeeze 1–2 lime wedges into the glass. Garnish with the remaining lime wedge. Serve immediately with a straw or reusable coconut spoon to scoop any tender coconut meat.
If using packaged coconut water
Chill the packaged coconut water in the refrigerator until cold (several hours) or use chilled from store.
Fill a tall glass with 1 cup ice cubes. Pour 2 cups of chilled packaged coconut water over the ice.
Optional: Add 1 teaspoon simple syrup or honey and a pinch (1/4 tsp) salt if you prefer a slightly sweeter or more electrolyte-rich drink. Stir until combined.
Bruise 6 mint leaves lightly and add to the glass. Squeeze 1–2 lime wedges into the drink and drop the wedges in as garnish.
Serve immediately with a straw. If desired, refrigerate remaining packaged coconut water and consume within 48–72 hours after opening.
