Construction & Aging Supplies
Prepare the Tobacco Blend
1. Condition the Nicaraguan long-filler tobacco to 65–70% relative humidity. If leaves are too dry, lay them on a slightly damp (not wet) towel inside a sealed container for a few hours; if too humid, air them out on mesh for several hours.
2. Select a mix of ligero (for strength), viso (for body), and seco (for burn and smoothness) to create a 5.0" x 54 robusto with medium strength. Measure approximately 14 g of filler per cigar for a firm but not overstuffed roll.
Make the Essential Oil Infusion
3. Using the dropper, measure 2 ml of the prepared essential oil blend (example ratio: 70% sweet orange, 25% pink pepper tincture, 5% clove). Essential oils are potent; keep the amount small and food-grade.
4. Mix the 2 ml essential oils with 10 ml neutral ethanol in a small glass vial to create a safe carrying solution. Swirl gently to combine.
5. If a lighter aroma is desired, dilute the ethanolic oil solution with up to 5 ml distilled water and shake well. This reduces harsh alcohol odor while keeping oils soluble enough for surface application.
6. Let the infusion sit for 15–30 minutes so aromas marry. Label the vial.
Roll and Shape the Bunch
7. Lay out the binder leaf flat on a clean work surface. Arrange the measured filler (14 g) evenly along the center of the binder, aligning the leaf veins to avoid lumps. Place stronger ligero on the outside near the binder for balanced burn.
8. Form the filler into a compact bunch by hand, rolling tightly enough to make a firm core but loose enough to allow proper draw. Tie the bunch lightly with cigar twine to hold shape, trimming excess twine.
9. Place the tied bunch into the cigar mold sized for a 5.0" x 54 ring gauge. Press the mold for 30–60 seconds to finalize shape. Remove the bunch from the mold and inspect for uniform density.
Apply the Binder and Wrapper
10. Wrap the bunch with the Corojo/Criollo binder leaf, taking care to overlap evenly and maintain the ring gauge. Use a bit of natural vegetable-based pectin or a tiny amount of distilled water to seal the binder if needed.
11. Trim and finish the cap of the binder. Let the bound cigar rest for 10–15 minutes to settle seams.
12. Take the Sumatra wrapper leaf and, if slightly too dry, humidify to workable pliability (65–68% RH). Lay the wrapper over the binder-wrapped bunch and roll with even tension to achieve a smooth, consistent surface. Use minimal sealing solution to avoid flavor contamination. Finish the cap and trim foot as desired.
Infuse with Essential Oil Aroma
13. Decide on infusion method: surface misting or controlled aging infusion. For subtle, integrated aroma preferred in a medium cigar, use aging infusion.
14. Place the finished cigars in a sealed aging box or humidor. Line the box with a cedar strip if available to add complexity.
15. Using the dropper, place 4–6 small drops (total ~0.5–1.0 ml) of the ethanolic essential oil solution onto a neutral absorbent surface (a 2" x 2" piece of coffee filter or blotting paper) — do not apply directly to the tobacco. For a lighter effect, start with fewer drops.
16. Place the absorbent patch inside the box, away from direct contact with cigars (e.g., in a small shallow dish or taped to the inner lid). Close the box and seal the humidor. Allow the cigars to age with the patch for 7–14 days, checking aroma intensity after 3 days.
17. If stronger aroma is desired, refresh the patch with 1–2 drops every 3–4 days for up to 2–3 weeks, then remove patch and leave the cigars sealed for an additional week to let the alcohol dissipate and the oils integrate.
Final Resting and Quality Check
18. After infusion period, open the box and smell one cigar at the foot and wrapper to confirm a balanced aromatic profile — citrus top notes with a light pink pepper spice and a subtle clove undertone, without solvent/alcohol scent.
19. Store the cigars in a humidor at 68–70°F (20–21°C) and 65–68% RH for an additional 2–4 weeks to smooth any edges and let the essential oil integrate fully.
20. Before packaging or sale, perform a draw and test-smoke sample: cut a small cap portion, light evenly, and assess burn, draw, and aromatic presence. Adjust future batches by slightly changing oil dose or infusion time to reach the desired medium aromatic intensity.
