Method

Preparation

1

Chill glass

Place a coupe or martini glass in the freezer for at least 5 minutes, or fill it with ice and cold water while you assemble the cocktail to ensure it is well chilled.

2

Prepare citrus

Roll the lemon on the counter firmly with your palm to release juices, then cut and squeeze enough to measure 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice. Set aside a lemon peel for garnish.

Mixing

3

Combine ingredients

In a cocktail shaker add 2 oz gin, 0.5 oz dry vermouth, 0.5 oz orange liqueur, 0.5 oz fresh lemon juice, 0.25 oz simple syrup and 2 dashes of orange bitters.

4

Add ice

Fill the shaker about two-thirds full with large ice cubes to properly chill and dilute the cocktail.

5

Shake

Seal the shaker and shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds, until the outside of the shaker is very cold and a small frost forms. This ensures proper dilution and a silky texture.

Service

6

Strain

Discard the ice/water from the chilled glass if used. Double-strain the mixture into the chilled coupe or martini glass using a Hawthorne strainer and a fine mesh strainer to catch small ice shards and pulp.

7

Garnish

Express the lemon peel over the drink by holding it over the glass skin-side down and giving it a firm twist to spray oils across the surface, then rub the peel on the glass rim and drop it into the cocktail as garnish.

8

Serve

Serve immediately while cold. Offer a small water on the side if desired.
