Preparation of Ingredients

  1. 1

    Slice the Onion

Peel and slice the medium onion into thin rings.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Beef Patty

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and black pepper. Form into two equal-sized patties.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Cook the Onions

In a skillet over medium heat, melt 1 tablespoon of butter. Add the sliced onions and sauté until they are soft and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from skillet and set aside.

  2. 4

    Cook the Beef Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter. Increase heat to medium-high and add the beef patties. Cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired doneness.

  3. 5

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Once the patties are cooked, place a slice of Swiss cheese on each patty and allow it to melt for about 1 minute. Remove patties from skillet.

  4. 6

    Grill the Sandwich

Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place two slices, buttered side down, into the skillet. Place a patty with melted cheese on top of each slice. Add caramelized onions, then top with the remaining slices of rye bread, buttered side up.

  5. 7

    Finish Cooking

Grill the sandwiches over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until the bread is golden brown and crispy and the cheese is melted.
