Cocktail
Optional Sugar Preparation (if using granulated sugar)
Method
Cocktail
Prepare glass and sugar (if using granulated)
If using granulated sugar instead of simple syrup: place 1 tsp granulated sugar in a rocks glass or mixing glass, add 1 tsp hot water and stir until dissolved. If using 1:1 simple syrup, add 1/2 tsp simple syrup directly to the glass.
Add bitters
Add 3 dashes orange bitters and 1 dash Angostura bitters (optional) to the dissolved sugar or simple syrup in the glass.
Stir and chill
Add one large ice cube to the glass and stir gently for 20–30 seconds (about 15–20 revolutions) to properly chill and dilute the cocktail.
Finish and garnish
Express the oils of an orange peel over the surface by holding the peel skin-side down over the glass and giving it a firm squeeze so the oils spray onto the drink. Wipe the rim with the peel (optional), then drop the peel into the glass. Garnish with one brandied cherry on a pick or dropped into the drink.
Optional: Make quick simple syrup
If you prefer to make fresh 1:1 simple syrup: combine equal parts sugar and hot water (for this recipe, 1/4 cup sugar and 1/4 cup hot water), stir until dissolved, cool and store. Use 1/2 tsp of this syrup per cocktail.
