Ramune Soda Base

Method

Ramune Soda Base

  1. 1

    Make simple syrup

Combine the granulated sugar with 2 tablespoons of warm (not hot) water in a small bowl or cup. Stir until the sugar dissolves completely to create a small simple syrup. Let it cool to room temperature (about 2–3 minutes).

  2. 2

    Mix flavoring

In a pitcher, add the cooled simple syrup, fresh lemon juice, citric acid, and the natural lemon extract (or vanilla extract if you prefer the classic Ramune flavor). Stir to combine.

  3. 3

    Combine with carbonated water

Pour the chilled carbonated water into the pitcher slowly to preserve fizz. Gently stir once or twice to incorporate the syrup and flavor without losing carbonation.

  4. 4

    Chill and serve

Fill glasses with ice cubes. Pour the prepared Ramune soda over the ice. Taste and adjust: if you want more sweetness, add up to 1 teaspoon more simple syrup; for brighter acidity add a few drops of lemon juice.

Optional flavor / garnish

  1. 5

For melon or fruit-flavored Ramune: add 1 tablespoon melon syrup (or chosen fruit syrup) to each 1 cup serving and stir gently. For a bluish color, add up to 1/2 teaspoon nonalcoholic blue curaçao syrup and stir. Garnish with a mint sprig if desired.
