Method

Hot Dogs & Buns

1

Prepare grill or pan

Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium-high (around 375–425°F / 190–220°C). If using a skillet or griddle, heat it over medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grate or pan with a neutral oil to prevent sticking.

2

Toast buns (optional)

Spread about 1/2 tablespoon of softened butter inside each bun. Place buns, buttered side down, on the grill or in the skillet for 30–60 seconds until golden and slightly crisp. Remove and set aside.

3

Cook the hot dogs

Place jumbo hot dogs on the preheated grill or in the skillet. Cook 5–8 minutes, turning frequently so they brown evenly and develop light char marks. If using a pan, press gently with a spatula for even contact. Cook until internal temperature reaches 160°F (71°C) for beef/pork or as recommended on package. For steaming/boiling alternative: simmer in near-boiling water 5–6 minutes then transfer to a hot skillet to sear 30–60 seconds per side.

Condiments

4

Prepare condiments

Place ketchup, mustard, and sweet pickle relish in small serving bowls or squeeze bottles. Stir each briefly to smooth consistency. Taste the relish; if too sweet, stir in a small pinch (about 1/8 tsp) of coarse salt to balance.

5

Assemble condiments on hot dog

Place a cooked hot dog into a toasted bun. Add about 1 tablespoon ketchup evenly along the length, 2 teaspoons yellow mustard in a line, and 1 tablespoon sweet pickle relish. Adjust amounts to taste.

Optional Toppings & Finishing

6

Add optional toppings

If using chopped onion, sprinkle about 1 tablespoon over each dressed hot dog. Add two dill pickle slices per hot dog if desired. Season lightly with a pinch (about 1/8 tsp) coarse salt and a small grind of black pepper to taste.

7

Serve

Serve the jumbo hot dogs immediately while hot. Provide extra ketchup, mustard, and relish on the side for guests who want more. Leftover cooked hot dogs can be refrigerated in an airtight container for up to 3 days.
