Method
Sandwich (per sandwich)
Layer meat and cheese
Arrange the 6 oz of thin-sliced deli meat evenly on the bottom half of the bread, overlapping slices slightly. Place 2 slices of your chosen cheese directly on top of the meat so it will melt between layers.
Add optional toppings
If using onion, roasted peppers, or pickles, distribute them over the cheese. Season lightly with black pepper and add hot sauce or horseradish if desired.
Heat & melt
There are three methods to heat and melt the sandwich: - Oven/broiler: Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) or set broiler on low. Place assembled sandwich on a baking sheet and heat for 6–8 minutes in the oven until the meat is hot and cheese is melted. If broiling, watch closely and broil 1–2 minutes until cheese bubbles. - Stovetop (covered): Heat a large skillet over medium-low heat. Place sandwich in skillet, cover with a lid to trap heat, and cook 3–5 minutes until cheese melts. For a crisped exterior, press gently with a spatula. - Panini press/grill: Preheat press and grill sandwich 3–5 minutes until toasted and cheese is melted. Choose the method you prefer; aim for internal temperature that makes the meat warm and cheese fully melted.
Finish & serve
Remove the sandwich from heat. Let rest 1 minute, then slice in half if desired. Serve hot with pickles, chips, or a side salad.
Assembly & finishing (optional)
Adjust quantities of optional toppings to taste. For extra crispness, brush the outside of the bread lightly with additional butter before toasting. If using roast beef, consider briefly warming the meat in a skillet with a teaspoon of oil and a pinch of black pepper before layering to improve heat-through.
