Inspect and prep tee

Wash and dry the black tee to remove sizing and shrink it before applying the design. Use a lint roller to remove any fibers or dust. Lay the tee flat on a clean work surface and smooth out wrinkles. Use the ruler and tailor's chalk to mark the center chest and desired vertical placement for the logo (typically 3–4 inches down from the collar for men's medium).

Prepare design and materials

If using layered heat-transfer vinyl (HTV), mirror each layer and cut your retro logo pieces in the correct order (base color first). Weed excess vinyl carefully using the weeding tool, leaving only the logo. Align transfer tape over the assembled vinyl layers to hold them in place. If using a printed stencil, cut the stencil precisely and make sure it's clean of stray bits.

Preheat and position

Preheat your heat press to 305°F (150°C) for standard HTV or follow the vinyl manufacturer's recommended temperature. If using an iron, set to the cotton/linen setting with steam off. Place the tee on the heat press platen or ironing board, insert a protective board inside the tee to prevent bleed-through. Position the logo using your chalk center marks, making sure it is straight and centered. Use small pieces of masking tape to hold the transfer in place if needed.

Press the logo

Cover the design with a Teflon sheet or parchment. Close the heat press and apply even pressure for 10–15 seconds (refer to vinyl instructions; some layered HTV requires longer or multiple presses). If using an iron, press firmly for 20–30 seconds, applying even pressure across the design and avoiding sliding. Wear heat-resistant gloves when handling hot items.

Cool and remove carrier

Allow the vinyl to cool for the recommended tack time (hot, warm, or cool peel per manufacturer's instructions). Carefully peel the transfer tape or carrier backing at a low angle. If any edges lift, re-cover with the Teflon sheet and press again for 5–10 seconds. Once the carrier is removed, do a final light press through the Teflon sheet for 2–3 seconds to set the layers.

Quality check

Inspect the logo for bubbles, lifting, or uneven adhesion. Smooth any minor imperfections by pressing again. Remove any chalk marks with a damp cloth. Check the interior to ensure no adhesive or residue bled through.

Cure and care instructions

Let the tee rest for at least 24 hours before washing to allow the adhesive to fully set. Recommend washing inside out on a gentle cycle with cold water and tumble dry low or air dry. Advise not to iron directly on the logo and to avoid dry cleaning.
