Cut fabric pieces

Prewash and dry the fabric to preshrink. Lay out pattern pieces (hoodie body front, back, sleeves, pocket, hood lining, cuffs, hem band) on the green fleece. Using a pattern sized for the desired measurements (sample: Medium), pin pattern pieces and cut: front (2), back (1 on fold), sleeves (2), hood outer and lining (2 each), kangaroo pocket (1), cuffs (2), hem band (1). Transfer notches and markings with chalk. Use rotary cutter or fabric scissors for clean edges.

Prepare rib cuffs and hem

Measure wrist circumference and desired band length. Cut rib knit to length accounting for 25% negative ease (so the band stretches to fit). Fold each rib piece lengthwise with right sides together and stitch the short ends with a 1/4 inch seam to form loops. Press seams toward one side.

Assemble shoulder seams and attach sleeves

With right sides together, pin and sew the front pieces to the back at the shoulder seams using a 3/8 inch seam and a stretch stitch or narrow zigzag. Press seams open or toward the back. Set sleeve into the armhole: align sleeve notch with shoulder seam, pin evenly, and sew using a stretch stitch, easing fullness as needed.

Sew side seams and sleeve seams

Fold the hoodie with right sides together, align side seams and sleeve seams, pin from hem through armpit to sleeve hem. Sew a continuous seam from hem up the side and along the sleeve using 3/8 inch seam allowance. Finish raw edges with a serger or zigzag stitch if desired. Press seams flat.

Attach cuffs and hem band

Fold cuff tubes in half lengthwise (right sides out) and align raw edges of cuff with sleeve hem, stretching cuff slightly to match. Pin and sew with a stretch stitch. For hem band, fold in half lengthwise (right sides out), align raw edge with body hem, stretch evenly and sew. Fold band down and topstitch seam allowance for a clean finish.

Construct hood

With right sides together, sew outer hood and lining pieces together along the curved back seam. Turn right side out, insert lining into outer hood with wrong sides together, match front edges and topstitch around the face opening if desired. Attach hood to neckline: with right sides together, align center back of hood to center back of neckline, pin and sew using a stretch stitch. Finish seam and press.

Kangaroo pocket (optional)

Prepare the pocket by fusing interfacing to the wrong side of the pocket piece where the logo/edge will be. Fold and press top edge of pocket 1/2 inch twice and topstitch. Pin the pocket to the front body piece, aligning center and spacing from hem as desired. Sew around pocket sides and bottom with a 3/8 inch seam allowance, backstitching at the start and end.

Insert drawstring

If using a drawstring, fold the hood front casing to create a channel (per pattern instructions) and stitch. Attach a safety pin to one end of the drawstring and feed it through the casing. Even the ends and knot or use aglets to finish.

Design and size logo

Decide on the retro 'Guy' logo size—commonly 8-10 inches wide for a center chest print on adult sizes. Draw or print a template of the logo at the chosen size on paper. Trim closely to use as a cutting guide.

Prepare applique materials

Trace the logo pieces onto the paper-backed fusible applique backing (or directly onto the wrong side of twill/HTV). If using multi-layer colors (cream base, red accent), cut base piece first from the cream twill, then cut smaller red details. Fuse the adhesive to the wrong side of the fabric according to manufacturer's instructions (usually iron for 8-12 seconds at cotton setting).

Cut and position logo

Carefully cut the logo pieces on the traced lines. Peel the paper backing from the fusible adhesive. Place the base logo onto the hoodie front where you want the retro logo centered (typically 3-4 inches below neckline for adult). Use temporary fabric adhesive spray or pins to hold the pieces in place.

Press and secure applique

Cover the applique with a pressing cloth and press firmly for the time recommended by the fusible adhesive instructions, working in sections to ensure full adhesion. Allow to cool so the bond sets.

Stitch applique edges

For durability, topstitch around the applique edges with matching or contrasting thread using a narrow zigzag or satin stitch. If adding red accents, stitch them now with precise alignment. Backstitch at the start and end. Trim any loose threads and press lightly.

Final pressing and quality check

Inspect all seams, hems, and the applique. Use the iron to press the hoodie, smoothing seams and flattening topstitching. Check that cuffs and hem lay flat and that the hood sits evenly. Repair any skipped stitches or snags.

Wash test (recommended)

For longevity, wash the finished hoodie on a gentle cycle in cold water and tumble dry low or air dry to ensure no shrinkage or adhesive failure. If anything shifts, resew or reinforce stitches as needed.

Label and finishing touches

Add any custom labels, hang tags, or size tags. Trim threads and package or hang the hoodie for use.
